Family Background
The background of the Berg and Steffens families in the early 20th century is of course intimately related to the political background of Germany at the time as well as to the histories of each family. It is a shame that our parents and grandparents are no longer alive and able to tell us more about their lives. And we were not inquisitive enough to ask while they were alive! So we have to rely on old documents and vague memories of what our parents told us in order to build our own impression of their lives. There are unfortunately too many gaps in our knowledge......

(text, pictures, documents, links)
Lisa was born in Deinste, Niedersachsen, on September 1st 1907 to Elisabeth and Heinrich Steffens. She was the second child, the first being her brother Fridrich Wilhelm Steffens.
By all accounts Lisa enjoyed a happy and protected childhood. She had a private tutor who apparently had a considerable influence on broading Lisa's mind, introducing her to new ideas and concepts outside the framework of the family traditions
